Craig Coopersmith named a Master of Critical Care Medicine

Emory University's Craig Coopersmith, MD, was inducted as a Master of Critical Care Medicine (MCCM) of the American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) during the Society of Critical Care Medicine's 49th Critical Care Congress in Orlando.
The is the highest designation one can have in critical care, and is awarded to an individual who has been a fellow of the ACCM for at least ten years and has distinguished themselves by achieving national and international professional prominence through personal character, leadership, eminence in clinical practice, outstanding contributions to research and education in critical care medicine, and years of exemplary service to the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the ACCM, and the field of critical care medicine in its broadest sense.
Dr. Coopersmith, professor of surgery, is vice chair of research of the Emory Department of Surgery, program director of the department's Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, and interim director of the Emory Critical Care Center. He has established himself as one of the top investigators of sepsis and shock in the country, and was a member of an international task force of experts that redefined the terms "sepsis" and "septic shock" in 2016. The resulting publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association was named one of the journal's Top Articles of the Decade.
Dr. Coopersmith's current research activity includes an NIH T32 training grant and three NIH R01 grants, two of which are collaborative studies with Emory transplant immunologist Mandy Ford, PhD, that are investigating aspects of the immunological host response in sepsis.
The SCCM is the largest non-profit medical organization dedicated to promoting excellence and consistency in the practice of critical care. With members in more than 100 countries, SCCM is the only organization that represents all professional components of the critical care team. The Society offers a variety of activities that ensures excellence in patient care, education, research, and advocacy. Dr. Coopersmith was president of SCCM from 2015-2016.
