Abe Matar receives AASLD Emerging Liver Scholar Award
AUGUST 2020
The Foundation of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) has recognized Emory general surgery resident Abe Matar, MD, with a 2020 AASLD Emerging Liver Scholar Award.
This award is designed to promote the study of liver disease among residents who have the potential for a career in academic medicine, and will grant Dr. Matar complimentary membership in the AASLD, attendance of the 2020 Digital AASLD Liver Meeting, and participation in the AASLD Resident/Fellow Ambassador Program.
Dr. Matar recently completed a two-year transplant immunology fellowship under the mentorship of Andrew Adams, MD, PhD, in which he focused on investigating mechanisms of transplant tolerance in pre-clinical models of kidney and liver transplantation.
Dr. Matar's application was sponsored by Ram Subramanian, MD, MBA, professor in the Department of Medicine, who serves as medical director of liver transplantation and director of liver critical care services for the Emory Transplant Center. In his dual role as transplant hepatologist and intensivist, Dr. Subramanian routinely mentors surgical residents during their rotation in the surgical ICU.
