Stephanie J. Drew, DMD, associate professor of surgery in the Emory Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been elected the 26th president of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS), and is the first female to serve in the position.
"We have chosen a proven leader, who exemplifies the surgical excellence, academic citizenship, and collegiality which ACOMS emphasizes," says R. Bryan Bell, DDS, MD, immediate past president of ACOMS. "Her vision for the College will strengthen and sustain its place in the training of current and future oral and maxillofacial surgeons."
Dr. Drew previously served ACOMS as Region I Regent, representing all of the oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the Northeastern states; chaired its Committee on Continuing Education for two years; co-chaired the organization's 37th Annual Scientific Conference in 2016; and was the founding chair of the Elaine Stuebner Scholarship for Women through ACOMS in 2017, an essay-based honor that gives the recipient opportunities in education and mentoring to advance their knowledge and skills.
"One of my primary goals as president of ACOMS is to bring the latest technological advances in surgical education to the members of the College," says Dr. Drew, who has been on the forefront of using virtual surgical planning in the daily practice of planning surgery for the correction of skeletal deformations of the jaws.
Dr. Drew's clinical interests lie in the treatment of skeletal facial deformations through her internationally recognized expertise in the areas of orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis. She also specializes in treating patients with cleft lip and palate, and has lectured both nationally and internationally on the topics of orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis, cleft alveolar repair, and syndrome recognition in the orthognathic patient population.
She is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is the editor-in-chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Cases, published by Elsevier. Dr. Drew also served six years as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
Considered an elite group of board-certified surgeons whose purpose is to provide surgical excellence through education and promote fellowship amongst oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ACOMS was founded in 1975 and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
