New Leadership and SSO Reapproval of the Breast Oncology Fellowship
FEBRUARY 2016
The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) has renewed its approval of the Emory Breast Oncology Fellowship through 2019. The one-year Emory fellowship is one of only 40 training programs across the nation that meets the SSO's strict requirements and is thereby able to participate in the SSO match.
The SSO approval coincides with the installation of new program director and surgical oncologist and breast cancer specialist Cletus Arciero, MD. Prior director Sheryl Gabram, MD, Emory Surgeon-in-Chief of Grady Memorial Hospital, had managed the fellowship since 2006.
Dr. Arciero's leadership skills and technical dexterity are influenced by his years of military service and tenure as program director of the general surgery residency at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Fort Gordon, GA. He plans to build upon the fellowship's outstanding legacy with expansion of the multidisciplinary approach to the care of the breast cancer patient.
The Emory Breast Oncology Fellowship trains two fellows per year within a multi-facility system that treats over 900 breast cancer patients annually and offers a wide-range of operative experience, including exposure to advanced oncoplastic and nipple sparing techniques.
