A Model Program
The Yancey Scholarship aims to set an example for residency programs nationwide as well as increase the number of trainees from difference backgrounds and a variety of perspectives in Emory's general surgery residency program. Named for a giant in Emory's own Department of Surgery, the award recognizes excellence and a commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes for all communities.
The application process for the 2025-2026 academic year is now open. Applications are due no later than Wednesday, April 23, 2025. A single award is expected for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Overview
The mission of the Asa G. Yancey Visiting Student Diversity Scholarship is to expose medical students who exemplify Dr. Yancey’s strengths and values to one of the various training programs in the Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. The award aims to increase the number of trainees at Emory from different backgrounds who exhibit substantial commitment to providing quality surgical care to all communities.
Scholar Responsibilities & Rotation Details
The Yancey Scholarship provides a stipend of $1,500 to support travel and housing expenses for the recipient during a one-month rotation on general, vascular or thoracic surgery services at Emory University Hospital. Yancey scholars receive mentoring from both faculty and current residents and meet with key leaders in the Department of Surgery.
Eligibility
Yancey scholarship applicants should be fourth-year medical students in good academic standing at their home institution with a demonstrated commitment to seeking innovative approaches in improving health care access and outcomes in a variety of communities and settings. Competitive applicants will have achieved honors or high passing score (or equivalent, i.e., A or B grade) in their third-year surgery clerkship.
Application
Interested students must have applied and been accepted for a rotation at Emory through Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™ (VSLO®)
Please list Emory A, Emory Acute Care Surgery, Emory Breast/Melanoma/Endocrine Surgery, and Emory Hepatobiliary Surgery as your VSLO rotation choices (in order of preference). If interested in any of the integrated surgery training programs (Cardiac, Plastic Surgery or Vascular), please include the rotation in your VSLO application.
In addition to VSLO, applicants must submit:
- Cover letter including personal statement
- Two letters of recommendation; one letter must be from their surgery clerkship director
- Letter of good standing from the Dean's office
- Curriculum vitae
- Transcript from the School Registrar's office
- USMLE STEP 1 result, and STEP 2 score if available
