Our Commitment
The Emory Department of Surgery General Surgery Residency Program recognizes the impact of racial and other discrimination on patient care, education, program culture, and wellbeing. As a residency program, we acknowledge our role, both active and passive, in permitting a culture of inequality and exclusion. We are committed to reassessing current program practices, incorporating antiracism education and training, and implementing policies that foster a more just and inclusive environment.
We pledge to:
-
Recruit and retain trainees who identify as underrepresented in medicine and surgery
-
Encourage quality improvement measures that target populations such as those who are incarcerated, socially disadvantaged, economically unstable, or otherwise vulnerable
-
Implement an antiracism curriculum that encourages safe and open discussion, listening, and learning towards action
Please visit the Department of Surgery's DEI program website for additional details on how we are working to provide compassionate, cross-cultural patient care and trainee education in dedication to the effort to eliminate health inequities across the globe.
