It is well known children in the United States differentially access autism services, both for diagnostic services and for support following a diagnosis. In order to gain a deeper understanding of some of the barriers contributing to this disparity, it is important to get the perspectives of experienced professionals directly involved with these children and the services. To this end, we interviewed 11 experienced daycare directors throughout the Metro Atlanta area, with particular focus on underserved areas, who have direct contact with children who may be in need of evaluation for autism or who have received a diagnosis. Each director had at least five years of experience in the field and is in charge of a childcare center regularly seeing children under the age of five. We asked the directors to complete a demographic survey and complete an in-person interview answering questions about what, in their experience, is preventing children in metro Atlanta from accessing autism services.
