Psychotropic Prescribing Patterns in Autistic Adults: A Health System Comparison with Adult Outpatient Psychiatry
Background: 50-79% of autistic individuals receive at least one psychotropic medication, increasing with age. Few studies compare autism prescribing directly against non-autism psychiatric populations in real-world clinical settings.
Why it matters: Behavioral-driven prescribing in autism may be exposing patients to higher cumulative side-effect burden than the underlying psychiatric indications justify.
