Letter from PD:
Thank you for your interest in our Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Emory University. Our aim is to train the next generation of specialists in urogynecology through a unique multidisciplinary curriculum with diverse clinical, research, and teaching experiences. Faculty in this fellowship program come from the fields of reconstructive and female urology, urogynecology, colon and rectal surgery, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.
Surgical training includes vaginal, abdominal, robotic, and laparoscopic approaches to surgical reconstruction. In addition, there is extensive training in the outpatient evaluation and management of complex pelvic floor disorders.
As a major academic institution, we offer mentorship in clinical, basic, and translational research leading to a thesis required for subspecialty certification. Our fellows have studied the impact of microorganisms on the urinary tract, surgical outcomes following pelvic reconstruction, and medical device development for the diagnosis and treatment of incontinence.
The aims of our fellowship program are for the fellows to:
- Practice independently in a rapidly changing healthcare environment by exposing trainees to diverse patient populations across a number of practice settings,
- Succeed in academic careers through formal training in teaching and mentoring in research,
- Improve the quality of care for women with complex pelvic floor disorders through formal quality improvement training,
- Function effectively as members of an interdisciplinary team that approaches treatment for complex pelvic floor disorders holistically through dedicated rotations with multiple specialties, and
- Excel and innovate in the surgical care of women with pelvic floor disorders through structured training and certification requirements in surgery.
