Fellowship Training with Emory Gynecology and Obstetrics
Letter from PD:
The fellowship program in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine is a three-year comprehensive ACGME and ABOG approved program incorporating clinical, surgical, research, and educational activities. Our program combines exceptional clinical training in maternal fetal medicine with a wide variety of research opportunities to prepare trainees for a future in academic medicine or community-based practice.
The Emory Gyn/OB department's mission is to maximally improve women’s health locally, nationally, and globally. We aim to lead the field of women’s health by delivering high-quality cutting edge treatment and care, conducting innovative research ranging from basic science to population health, integrating knowledge resulting from this into practice, and also recruiting and training the next generation of OB/GYNs to be outstanding clinicians, researches, teachers and leaders in our field.
The clinical experiences of our MFM fellows are obtained at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown. Grady is a large safety-net hospital in downtown Atlanta with over 900 beds. It is a Level 1 trauma center, a tertiary care center, and has the regional perinatal center. Emory University Hospital Midtown is a 458 bed community-based tertiary care facility in midtown Atlanta. The Emory MFM Experience allows fellows to supervise residents on L&D, on antepartum, and Ob clinic rotations. We have 3 full-time genetic counselors in our Emory Perinatal Centers with vast knowledge in essential genetic disease and testing. Our fellows gain tremendous experience managing pregnant patients living with HIV and also have opportunities for collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Upon finishing our MFM program, fellows will be ready for independent practice and will be qualified to serve as a consultant and practitioners in MFM in an academic or private setting. The experience at Emory will allow them to become extremely proficient at the management of high-risk pregnancies, ultrasound, and antenatal diagnosis.
Education:
There are numerous didactic sessions the fellows are involved in during fellowship. We have a weekly dedicated MFM fellows lecture series that includes lectures from MFM faculty and faculty from other specialties. In addition to lecture series the fellow have numerous other conferences:
- Grand Rounds (weekly)
- Combined Anomaly Conference (monthly)
- Genetics Lecture (monthly)
- Ultrasound lecture (monthly)
- High-risk case list conference (monthly)
- MFM Division Meeting (monthly)
- MFM Journal Club (monthly)
- Joint MFM/Adult Congenital Heart Disease Conference (monthly)
- Extended fellows Didactics (monthly)
- Amniocentesis and CVS simulation (biannually)
Additionally, the fellows attend a number of annual meetings throughout fellowship.
Research:
Fellows are expected to complete a thesis project during their training that is of quality to satisfy the ABOG requirement for subspecialty board certification in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Dedicated blocks of research time and statistical support are provided. The fellowship is designed to support 12 to 18 months of protected research that can be divided over three years as best accommodates the research project chosen by the fellow.
We have dedicated monthly research conferences to ensure fellows understand study design, improve scientific inquiry, and critical evaluation of literature.
