Beyond training in fundamental clinical skills, the Transitional Year Program promotes intellectual curiosity and discovery through a wide selection of electives, and leadership and teacher development through resident directed core conferences.
The program produces well-rounded residents who have balanced experience in a variety of clinical settings prior to entering advanced residency programs. While there is an aspect of your schedule driven by the board requirements of your advanced specialty, we will work with you to craft a schedule that allows you to explore your own interests. In general, Transition Year students are scheduled for:
-
18 to 24 weeks of inpatient Internal Medicine wards (depending on subspeciality needs), split between Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital at Midtown, and the Atlanta VA.
-
Two to four weeks of medicine intensive care (Exception: Anesthesia has two months per board requirements)
-
Four weeks of emergency medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital
-
Four weeks of outpatient ambulatory care at the Atlanta VA
-
Three to four months of elective time with roughly half related to your advanced specialty and the other half your choice, which you would arrange roughly one to two months prior.
-
8-12 weeks of of elective time with roughly half related to your advanced specialty and the other half your choice, which you would arrange roughly one to two months prior.
-
Three weeks of vacation, which you would schedule prior to orientation in June, and one week off for the holidays (either the week of Christmas or New Year’s) scheduled via lottery.
