Program Objectives
Residents may apply in the winter of intern year.
- To optimize resident’s clinical skills in outpatient and inpatient HIV care in preparation for either a future subspecialty career in infectious diseases or as a primary care HIV provider.
- To offer residents a two-year continuity clinic experience caring for people with HIV (PWH).
- To provide residents a comprehensive review of outpatient and inpatient HIV-related topics using a variety of learning modalities, including monthly live didactic sessions, completion of board-like questions (with CME credit), and time to review other self-learning resources.
- To encourage residents’ involvement in HIV-related scholarly activities.
Program Activities
PGY-2
- Continuity Clinic at IDP: Residents will spend one half-day a week on Y weeks to longitudinally care for patients living with HIV.
- Distinction Time (two half days a week on Y weeks): This time will be used to see patients at IDP with other IDP providers which will maximize resident’s exposures to other clinicians. It can also be used to complete self-learning resources/assignments or start working on scholarly activities.
- Y Subspeciality Time: Residents on the HIV distinction program can request additional clinical time at either IDP or EUHM ID clinic during their Y week (two half days a week on Y weeks).
- Monthly Live Didactic Sessions: These will be held one Tuesday per month from 5-6 p.m. IDP providers will go over high-yield concepts related to the monthly HIV-related topic.
- Monthly Self-Learning Resources: Each month, residents will receive a monthly package with self-learning resources and/or a series of ABIM-style questions to be completed during that month.
- Scholarly Activities: Residents will hold a meeting with Dr. Cantos at the beginning of the academic year to go over possible options of engagement with scholarly activities based on interests and skills. Dr. Cantos will them pair residents with specific faculty members for further discussions about potential collaborations.
PGY-3
- Continuity Clinic at IDP: Residents will spend one half-day a week on Y weeks to longitudinally care for patients living with HIV.
- Y Subspeciality Time: Residents in the HIV Distinction Program or HIV Interest Group can request additional clinical time at either IDP or EUHM ID clinic during their Y week (two half-days a week on Y weeks).
- Scholarly Activities: Residents will complete the scholarly activities from their PGY2 year. Activities include: manuscript writing/submission; abstract submission to conference; capstone seminar on an HIV-related topic; Clinico-Pathological Case (CPC) presentation during Internal Medicine Grand Rounds; curriculum development product; and co-leading a monthly didactic session, etc.
