The Distinction in Point of Care Ultrasound will be awarded to those residents who take initiative to learn, integrate, apply, and promote the use of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in their health care practice. Residents will commit to the Distinction in Point of Care Ultrasound starting at the beginning of their PGY-2 year and extend their learning and focus through their PGY-3 year. Chosen residents will be given access to a POCUS device that they will carry and be responsible for over the remaining course of their residency to assist them in achieving POCUS competency.
Program Opportunities
Participants in this comprehensive two-year program will have the opportunity to:

Pair with a physician mentor with expertise in the rapidly evolving field of point of care ultrasound

Complete formal and informal educational training in the area of point of care ultrasound

Carry and utilize a personal portable point of care ultrasound device in daily clinical practice during their junior and senior years of residency

Develop a diverse point of care ultrasound image portfolio

Successfully pass a point of care ultrasound knowledge and skills test

Serve as a physician lead and/or developer of a point of care ultrasound service, educational, or research project

Graduate residency with a Distinction in Point of Care Ultrasound
Program Components
The components of this distinction curriculum will focus on the development of:

POCUS image interpretation
- POCUS clinical practice integration
Upon successful completion of the curriculum, image portfolio, and competency assessment, residents will be given a certificate summarizing the specific POCUS skills for which they have proven to be able to acquire, interpret, and clinically integrate into patient care. The program will ensure that each resident achieves tailored competencies in point of care ultrasound that will positively impact their individual patient care.
