The Barry Shur Teaching Award is given annually in honor of Barry D. Shur, PhD, and Chair of Cell Biology, 1996-2010, to honor our most outstanding and committed educators.
During his time as department chair, Dr. Shur led the department through a time of remarkable change and growth. A native of New Jersey, Barry attended Marietta College in Ohio where he earned a B.S in Biology with honors. As a graduate student at the Johns Hopkins University with Dr. Stephen Roth, he began the study of carbohydrates and glycosyltransferases and their roles in cell-cell interactions during fertilization and development that would continue throughout his scientific career.
