Mission Statement
We are basic research scientists running active research laboratories and contributing to the scientific training and education of undergraduate, Ph.D., M.D., and MD/Ph.D. students, as well as postdoctoral fellows and staff. We engage in research, teaching, and service in support of the pillars of excellence of the Emory University School of Medicine. As such, we recruit students and faculty, train students and fellows, and support the career advancement of our trainees and colleagues.
Program Highlights
Marion Hines Memorial Lecture:
2026 Marion Hines Memorial Lecture
Invited Speaker: Susan S. Margulies, PhD
Talk Title: "Bridging the Species Gap: Scaling Traumatic Brain Injury Loads and Assessments Across Species to Accelerate Prevention and Diagnosis".
On March 17, 2026, Dr. Susan Margulies will present the 2026 Marion Hines Lecture. Dr. Margulies is one of the world’s top researchers on traumatic brain injury in children. The methods she’s developed for diagnosing and assessing these injuries are helping children receive earlier and more effective treatment. Her research on how head injuries affect brain tissues has led to promising preclinical trials for new treatment strategies.
During her visit, Dr. Margulies will participate in a panel discussion, "Women in STEM: Achievements and Challenges at all Career Stages," moderated by Dr. Anita Corbett, Professor of Biology at Emory University. The panel will host successful female faculty and trainees from the School of Medicine to discuss their career paths and respond to audience questions.
These events were followed by a reception. All events were open to the Emory community.
"Cell Bio Coffee Break"
"Cell Bio Coffee Break" featured a baking contest highlighting cuisine representing our diverse cultures
Trainee Spotlight:
2025 was our fifth year featuring the Trainee Spotlight, which recognizes and celebrates the scholarly achievements of our most exemplary trainees. Trainees were also presented with a small gift at our annual holiday party.
Winners of the Trainee Spotlight pose each year with their mentors at our annual holiday party.
Wednesday Invited Seminar Series
Cell Biology hosts faculty from outside institutions to present seminar at our weekly Wednesday Invited Seminar Series, which includes lunch with students and one-on-one faculty meetings. These seminars are inclusive, and all are welcome to attend. Several speakers also lead career development discussion sessions.
Research in Progress: Talks by Trainees & Postdocs
Cell Biology hosts Research in Progress, a trainee-led lecture series of talks by students and postdocs highlighting ongoing research across departmental labs.
