Clinical experience

Clinical rotations are completed in both academic medical centers and private practice settings, providing a well-rounded training experience. Across all sites, the primary goal is to help students build the knowledge, technical skills and clinical judgment needed to become safe and effective anesthesia practitioners.

Emory AA students gain a wide range of clinical experiences, including general surgical cases and specialty areas such as cardiac, pediatric, and obstetric anesthesia. Students are offered a variety of clinical rotations, both in the Metro Atlanta area and through out-of-town rotation opportunities.

Semesters 1-4

During the first four semesters of the curriculum, students complete coursework, hands-on skills labs, human patient simulation experiences, and semester-long clinical rotations in metro-Atlanta. By the end of Semester 4, students complete a minimum of 500 clinical hours.

Semesters 5-7

In the final 12 months of the curriculum, students participate in full-time clinical rotations and monthly peer-led seminars. The clinical rotations provide compressive exposure to all major subspecialty areas of anesthesia, including required rotations in cardiac, obstetric, and pediatric anesthesia. Clinical rotations during this phase of the curriculum are assigned both in metro-Atlanta and out-of-town.  

This progressive structure prepares graduates for clinical practice with a broad and diverse skill set. 



As part of the Emory School of Medicine, clinical care and training is a major focus of the Anesthesiologist Assistant (AA) program. Students have the opportunity to train in Emory-owned and major-affiliate facilities and hospital systems in the metro Atlanta area as well as participating out-of-town locations.
