Keith Delman Admitted into American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators

Emory surgical oncologist Keith Delman, MD, professor of surgery, was among the 91 esteemed inductees from seven countries that composed the inaugural class of the new American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. The Academy's first induction ceremony occurred during the American College of Surgeons' 2018 Clinical Congress, held October 21-25 in Boston.
Dr. Delman is vice chairman of education of the Emory Department of Surgery, program director of the general surgery residency program at Emory Surgery, and director of the Carlos and Davis Center for Surgical Anatomy and Technique (CSAT). Dr. Delman's achievements as an educator include assisting in the establishment of the Emory Surgery Global Surgery Program in 2011, one of the first American Board of Surgery-approved international surgical training experiences; spearheading the 2012 renovation of the Department's surgical education offices in Emory University Hospital to include such advanced teaching technologies as a dedicated 24 hour simulation lab; and transitioning CSAT from its primarily print media platform to a digital, electronic format to disseminate educational materials related to developing knowledge of surgical anatomy.
Dr. Delman's primary clinical specialty is the surgical treatment of melanoma. As co-chair of the Melanoma Working Group/Multi-Disciplinary Tumor Board at Winship Cancer Institute, a position he has held since 2006, Dr. Delman leads the multidisciplinary care of nearly half of all patients diagnosed with melanoma in the state of Georgia each year. Dr. Delman and Emory urologist Viraj Master, MD, PhD, were the first team in the world to perform minimally invasive inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy for melanoma in 2009. Drs. Delman and Master have gone on to teach the procedure to surgeons from institutions located around the world.
Developed under the auspices of the ACS Division of Education, the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators recognizes surgeon leaders who have devoted their careers to surgical education. Individuals are selected as members or associate members following stringent peer review. The Academy's mission is to play a guiding role in advancing the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties.
Academy membership carries an obligation for commitment to the Academy's goals, which are to identify, recognize, and recruit innovators and thought leaders committed to advancing lifelong surgical education; translate innovation into actions; offer mentorship to surgeon educators; foster exchange of creative ideas; disseminate advances in surgical education; and positively impact the quality of surgical care and patient safety.
