Emory Surgery Places 7th in NIH Funding Rankings for 2017

According to ranking tables of annual NIH funding posted by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the Emory Department of Surgery attained the 7th position in funding for all departments of surgery nationwide in 2017, rising from the 9th position it held for the prior two years.
The 2017 ranking is based on a total of $10,979,725 million in awards (direct plus indirect costs are included, R & D contracts are not), and underscores the diversity, utility, and commitment to improving surgical care shared by the department's basic science, clinical, and translational research programs.
Transplant immunologists Christian Larsen, Andrew Adams, and Mandy Ford; novel cancer imaging and targeted therapeutic agents specialist Lily Yang; health services researcher Rachel Patzer; cardiovascular biomechanics and treatment technologies investigator Muralidhar Padala; and sepsis and shock scientist Craig Coopersmith placed in the top 100 NIH-funded, department of surgery-based principal investigators. Kidney transplant immunology researcher I. Raul Badell and vascular disease investigator Luke Brewster were also highly ranked.
"I am incredibly proud of the breadth and depth of research within the Department of Surgery," says Dr. Coopersmith, who is also vice chair of research for the department. "Considering that 76 different departments of surgery have NIH funding, placing seven researchers within the top 100 nationally is extraordinary. This is a true testament to the devotion to research within the department and speaks to our passion to make a difference in the lives of the patients we treat today and those who will be our patients in the future."
The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research has been publishing ranking tables online of annual NIH funding since 2006, and the data it posts is calculated from the NIH's Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT).
