Drug and alcohol use during pregnancy can be dangerous for both mother and child. Stigma about using substances during pregnancy can prevent people from getting help. Women may be afraid to ask for help or tell their health care providers about use. Health care providers may think asking questions will offend patients. Honest conversations can fight stigma and lead to better outcomes. It is time to change our attitudes, our language and reduce stigma. Let’s REFRAME the way we talk without using words like “addict,” “relapse,” “clean” or “dirty.” Better communication leads to better outcomes.
