Emory Emergency Medicine PGY2 resident Timothy J. Cartwright chose Emory for his EM residency because of “Emory’s commitment to the residents’ well-being and purposeful initiatives on diversity. The patient population across the distinct training sites was also an advantage of Emory that not many other programs could match.”
Cartwright graduated from Emory University with a BS in Biology and completed his medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine, Savannah. He became interested in Emergency Medicine when he worked as an EMT before attending medical school. During his time as an EMT, he had the unique opportunity to interact with emergency medicine physicians and got a glimpse into the world of emergency medicine from the pre-hospital setting. “I was attracted to the prospect of managing the unknown, taking care of literally anyone who walked through the emergency department’s doors, and being trusted to make lifesaving medical decisions and interventions in pressure-packed situations.”
When asked what he likes most about working at Emory, he commented, “I really enjoy the people I work with. It is amazing to have co-workers who genuinely enjoy helping people, who work very hard to fulfill the mission of the hospitals, who can make you laugh even in the toughest situations. Residency is tough; having the Emory-Grady family to support me during this process of becoming the best physician I can goes a long way.”
After residency, Cartwright plans to fulfill his service obligation with the United States Air Force, taking care of the American members of the armed forces and their families at home or abroad.
Cartwright is married to Corinne Cartwright and the couple have a daughter. Cartwright credits his success to his wife, “I would not be in my current position as a resident in the nation’s best Emergency Medicine residency without the love, support, and guidance of my beautiful wife. She selflessly cares for our daughter while I work, gives me the necessary pick-me-ups after tough shifts, and tolerates my sometimes-wacky shift or call schedules. I am grateful to the program for offering our families just as much support as they offer the residents.”
We are grateful to have Dr. Cartwright as a part of our Emergency Medicine family.
