Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that Philip Shayne, MD, FACEP, has been named Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Emory School of Medicine. In this role, Dr. Shayne will provide leadership and oversight for the 115 ACGME-accredited residency programs at Emory, which train nearly 1,400 residents and fellows.
Prior to this role, Dr. Shayne served as Assistant Dean for GME and Associate DIO for more than 5 years. He is also professor and vice chair for education in the Department of Emergency Medicine and served as Emory’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director for 17 years. Dr. Shayne has been on the Emory faculty since 1996. He practices at Grady Memorial Hospital and maintains an office in the James B. Williams Medical Education Building.
Dr. Shayne is a Past President of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) and is an American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) oral board examiner. Dr. Shayne completed a six-year term on the Review Committee for Emergency Medicine of the ACGME, including three years as Chair. He received the ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award in 2010.
Dr. Shayne transitions into this role following Maria Aaron, MD, who served as Associate Dean and DIO since 2016. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Aaron for her thoughtful leadership, particularly as we navigated the challenges of the pandemic and its impacts on our trainees. Dr. Aaron also recently led a comprehensive GME strategic planning effort that will better position our programs for future success.
Join us in thanking Dr. Aaron and congratulating Dr. Shayne.
Bill
