Carlos del Rio appointed Executive Associate Dean, Emory School of Medicine at Grady Health System
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Carlos del Rio to the position of Executive Associate Dean for Emory School of Medicine at Grady Health System. In this role, effective Nov. 1, 2019, he will provide executive oversight and strategic vision for Emory’s clinical, research and teaching missions at Grady. He also will serve as Board Chair of the Emory Medical Care Foundation. Dr. del Rio will play a critically important leadership role in continuing to strengthen our relationship with Grady, a key component of the School of Medicine’s strategic framework.
“Dr. del Rio’s contributions to Grady have been exceptional. His commitment to our patients and unparalleled leadership skills make him an outstanding choice for his new role. We are excited to continue working with him on our common goal of excellence at Grady,” said John Haupert, president and CEO, Grady Health System.
Dr. del Rio moves into this role having successfully served as the Interim Executive Associate Dean since January 2017. He is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, co-Director of the Emory Center for AIDS Research, and co-PI of the Emory-CDC HIV Clinical Trials Unit. For the past decade Dr. del Rio was the Richard N. Hubert Professor and Chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health.
Carlos del Rio has spent his career working to prevent, treat and improve patient outcomes for infectious diseases locally and globally, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS. He did his medicine residency (1983-86) and infectious diseases fellowship (1986-88) at Emory and served as Chief Resident at Crawford W. Long Hospital (now Emory University Hospital Midtown). He was Chief of the Emory Medical Service at Grady Memorial Hospital from 2001 through 2009, and he has built an excellent research program that has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1998. His research interests include the early diagnosis of HIV, access to care and compliance with antiretrovirals with a particular focus on vulnerable populations. For these accomplishments and others, he has received multiple awards, including election to the National Academy of Medicine (previously the Institute of Medicine) and the Thomas Jefferson Award from Emory University.
As we welcome Dr. del Rio, I also express my sincere appreciation for the co-chairs and members of the Search Advisory Committee for their diligent efforts to identify quality candidates. I am confident that Dr. del Rio’s extensive accomplishments and committed leadership—both at Grady and in the School of Medicine—have positioned him for success as the Executive Associate Dean. Please join me in thanking Dr. del Rio for his continued service to our patients and students, and congratulating him on this new role.
