Transportation Resources
When one is not physically able to get in and out of a family car/van, transportation can become a challenge. It can be even more challenging with a power wheelchair. Most power wheelchairs cannot be easily moved into nor fit in a typical van. Unfortunately, health insurance does not typically cover non‐ emergent medical transportation, even to and from doctors’ appointments. One option is to purchase a handicapped accessible wheelchair van. However, these specialty vehicles are expensive, and it is not an option for everyone. Below is some information we hope will help as you navigate your transportation needs.
FREE Transportation Options:
ALS United of Georgia FREE Van Loaner Program - The ALS United Georgia has a program where you can borrow a wheelchair van for doctor’s appointments or other outings as long as you plan with them at least two weeks in advance. For more information, call 404-636-9909.
Medicaid Transportation -If you have Medicaid, call the number listed on your Medicaid identification card to inquire about transportation services to and from medical appointments. Typically, if you schedule at least three days in advance, you can receive free transportation to and from medical appointments.
