Program Overview

Welcome from Program Director

I am pleased that our ACGME-accredited program in Medical Genetics and Genomics is one of the best in the country. We are a vibrant group of genetics professionals committed to training the next generation of medical geneticists.

Our candidates must be physicians who have successfully completed one year of caring directly for patients in a primary care field, such as Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or OB/GYN. Candidates who have completed a primary care residency are preferred.

Details

The Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency is a two-year, fully-funded program that includes:

  • 18 months of broad-based, clinically oriented medical genetics and genomics practice.
  • Six weeks of clinical laboratory training.
  • Three months of self-directed learning.
  • Three weeks of paid vacation per year.

Highlights

  • A team of eight medical geneticists with broad experience in clinical genetics, metabolism, and clinical trials.

  • A large catchment area, including the state of Georgia, as well as parts of Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida, ensuring the trainee broad exposure to rare diseases in the inpatient and outpatient settings. There are over 5,000 outpatient visits and 800 inpatient consultations a year.

  • Emory has the newborn screening follow-up contract for the state of Georgia. As such, residents will learn all aspects of newborn screening and have the opportunity to partake in pilot programs for new disorders.

  • The Division of Medical Genetics has a dedicated Clinical Trials Group composed of genetic counselors, nurses, coordinators, and PIs to help bring new therapies to patients with genetic diseases. Currently, there are more than 25 active clinical trials.

  • All trainees attend and present (at minimum) at one national meeting a year, typically either ASHG, ACMG, or SIMD.

  • All trainees attend the North American Metabolic Academy.

  • A premier genetic counseling training program.

  • Trainees have the option to stay for another year for our fellowship in Medical Biochemical Genetics, directed by Hong Li, MD, PhD.

  • The Division is part of Emory’s Department of Human Genetics, which boasts over 50 faculty members who are among the brightest and best leaders in clinical and human genetics.
