Appointments, Promotions and Tenure Committee
The committee's purpose is to educate faculty members about the appointment and promotions process, to facilitate the appointment and promotion process, to provide feedback to faculty, and to make recommendations regarding faculty promotions.
Annually in the spring, the committee solicits CVs and promotion readiness self-assessment documents from faculty that have had sufficient time in rank to qualify for promotion (five years for assistant to associate professor, and four years for associate professor to full professor). Those felt by the committee to be ready for promotion are invited to move on to complete a full promotion packet for submission to the School of Medicine. For those not yet felt to be ready for promotion, written feedback is provided about what areas of their CV need strengthening. Faculty are encouraged to share and review their feedback with their mentor and career development committee.
The committee is comprised of the Vice-Chair and Associate Vice-Chair for Faculty Development and eight additional members representing the Department.
How to prepare for your promotion
Appointments and promotions are guided by the School of Medicine's Guidelines on Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure. Visit Appointments, Promotions and Tenure for more detail about the promotions process within the School of Medicine.
Here are recommended steps to take in preparation for your promotion:
- Step 1: Regularly update your promotion documents, including your CV, and teaching and service portfolios. Please do not wait until promotion time!
- Step 2: Read the School of Medicine's guidelines on appointment, promotion, and tenure and discuss any questions with your division director or mentor. Additional information on the senior promotion process is available online from the School of Medicine.
- Step 3: Attend a CV building workshop and learn how to best prepare your CV.
- Step 4: Attend a CV review session, where a member of the Promotions and Tenure Subcommittee will help you know if you are on track for promotion.
- Step 5: Submit your CV and promotion self-assessment once solicited by the Promotions Coordinator, which will be after you’ve met the minimum time in rank (five years between assistant and associate professor and four years between associate professor and professor).
