One-on-One Mentoring
A mentor is a person that can support you in your career development by being a trusted advisor sharing their knowledge, skills, and experience.
The department is committed to you having the mentorship that you need. The Division Chairs and Program Leads will work with each faculty member at the rank of assistant and associate professor to ensure that they are paired with a mentor. Mentees and mentors are encouraged to meet at least quarterly, if not monthly or more frequently according to the mentees-mentor's needs and preferences.
Career Development Committees
Every faculty member at the level assistant and associate professor will be given a Career Development Committee, consisting of two faculty members senior to them in rank and experience.
These senior faculty members are not mentors, but rather serve as advisors or coaches, providing guidance, support, and advice, and potentially assisting the faculty member in making connections to advance their research and other academic interests. The Faculty Development Vice-Chair and Associate Vice-Chair will work with each faculty member to make sure that the senior faculty members on their Career Development Committee are a good fit for them. The committee will work in concert with a mentor to support career development.
The committees meet twice a year at mutually agreeable times to review progress and identify road blocks. Potential avenues of discussion include:
- Reviewing the faculty member's service, teaching, and scholarship achievements and their progress towards promotion.
- Reflecting on which aspects of their career the faculty member is finding most inspiring and least enjoyable.
- Identifying what is working well and why, along with any perceived barriers to progress.
- Strategizing about mentors, collaborators, and opportunities both inside and outside of Emory that might help the faculty member further their goals.
Meetings can be virtual, in an office or conference room on campus, or even over a coffee or a drink – whatever is the most comfortable and conducive to reflection and collaboration.
