The Yoon basic and translational cardiovascular lab is working on projects targeting cardiovascular regeneration.
The overall goal of Dr. Yoon’s laboratory is to develop regenerative therapy for ischemic cardiovascular diseases using stem or progenitor cells and tissue engineering technologies. Over the past 20 years, our research has focused on developing cell-based therapy for cardiovascular disease. Our research has shown the generation of stem cells, their differentiation into the cardiac and vascular lineages, generation of reprogrammed cardiovascular cells and tissues, and investigation of their therapeutic effects and mechanisms in cardiovascular diseases.
We have developed systems to differentiate human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), including human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), into cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells (ECs) including lymphatic endothelial cells. In addition, we have developed bioengineering approaches to enhance cell survival and function of the implanted cells in cardiovascular tissues. As a new approach, we have also developed a reprogramming system, which can covert human fibroblasts into endothelial cells (ECs), called directly reprogrammed ECs (rECs); into smooth muscle cells (SMCs), called reprogrammed SMCs; and cardiovascular tissue which include reprogrammed cardiovascular cells and extracellular matrix. We have also explored novel therapeutic options for treating diabetic neuropathy and lymphedema using stem cells and small molecules.
Yoon lab is also heavily committed to training next generation scientists and physicians. Thus far, Dr. Yoon have mentored more than 90 undergraduate student interns (among whom almost have entered medical or dental schools, more than 10 entered Ph.D programs), 4 basic science cardiology fellows, 5 medical students, 14 Ph.D students, and 33 post-doctoral fellows.
Current Research Topics include but are not limited to:
- Stem-based therapy for cardiac regeneration and vascular regeneration
- Direct Reprogramming of human cells toward endothelial cells and cardiovascular tissues
- Regenerative tissue engineering approaches with novel synthetic biomaterials: injectable and patch
- Regenerative therapy for lymphatic vascular disease such as lymphedema or wound healing
- Cell and small molecule therapy for diabetic neurovascular complications
- Epigenetic studies for cardiac development and drug discovery
