Strategy: Enhance our culture to ensure a supportive work environment where all people are included, engaged, and can thrive

We never forget that humanity is at the core of healthcare. We are a community working together to improve health, and our goal is to break down barriers to communication and collaboration so that all people can participate. The best innovation happens when people are included from diverse backgrounds, and we know we have to make a concerted effort to bring all parties to the table.


We’re actively seeking passionate, creative thinkers from every discipline and background — doctors, patients, teachers, students, researchers, and thinkers from every field — who are looking to reshape how the world thinks about medicine. We are building a culture where there is no we and they, only all of us.


Plans

Recruitment and proactive retention

  • Develop recruitment goals, targets, and funding plans
  • Practice proactive retention

Culture and communication

  • Continue enhancement of engagement, diversity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Enhance mechanisms for bi-directional communication

Leadership and empowering chairs

  • Create educational development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students
  • Develop opportunities for departmental entrepreneurship

What we’re doing

  • Proactively measuring faculty and staff engagement and developing department-specific action plans to tackle challenges and increase wellness and resilience
  • Sheryl Heron, MD, MPH, FACEP was named the Associate Dean for Community Engagement, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the School of Medicine
  • We implemented a “train the trainer” program to provide more sessions across the School of Medicine on unconscious bias.
  • In 2021, the School of Medicine Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan was released
  • We launched the Bold Leaders speaker series which invites forward-visioning leaders to join a school-wide conversation and idea exchange on topics of leadership, wellness, and diversity, equity and inclusion.
