Biomedicine and technology account for more than 80 percent of entrepreneurial activity among Emory researchers. An even stronger focus on entrepreneurship and innovation will enhance our efforts to recruit young investigators, and ultimately will create new solutions, products and services to benefit people everywhere.
Plans
Nurture an environment of innovation and entrepreneurship
- Foster innovative faculty–industry relationships through coordinated efforts with the Emory Biomedical Catalyst initiative and the University Task Force on Innovation
- Create a program in design thinking
- Developing an Innovation Floor housed in HSRBII which will include accelerator space for start-ups and entrepreneurial research designed to promote translation of scientific discoveries.
- Maximizing opportunities for the EHC migration to Epic; Coordinating with the EHC discovery and innovation strategic planning subject matter team to develop an enterprise-wide strategy that thoughtfully integrates research into the clinical mission; and Understanding and documenting feasibility for expanding clinical research space.
What We’re Doing
- Launched an online tool, the Venture Navigator, to provide guidance and support to scientist entrepreneurs at any stage of the venture development process
- Founded the Morningside Center for Innovative and Affordable Medicine
- Continue to work with our University, health care, and other partners to support innovation initiatives, including the Emory Healthcare Innovation Hub and The Hatchery, Center for Innovation
- Continued support of the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance
- Established and awarded the first two SOM Innovation for Impact Awards to Muralidhar Padala (2019) and Wilbur Lam (2020). The award is designed to recognize innovation that transforms or has enormous potential to transform clinical, education and/or societal outcomes.
- Creation of the Innovation Forum which brings together Georgia Tech and Emory entrepreneurs and partnering with Georgia Tech's Biolocity to support a pipeline for accelerating medical technology development.
- Exploring the development of a Drug Innovation Center in partnership with others across Emory to advance drug technologies to higher inflection points.
