The Department of Pathology provides an invigorating environment for residents and fellows interested in investigative pathology. Many faculty within the department are internationally renowned in their respective fields and currently serve as Principle Investigators for more than $24 million in NIH research, placing Emory in the top 5 among Departments of Pathology.
Research includes basic and translational studies in areas of diagnostic and prognostic anatomic pathology, molecular diagnostics, informatics, transfusion medicine, immunology, vaccine research and epithelial biology. This breadth of research and funding enables residents to explore a broad range of research topics within pathology and easily find highly supportive faculty mentors with similar interests.
Residency Research Track
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of Emory University School of Medicine offers a research track for residency training in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Clinical Pathology (CP). This track is intended for those residents who are committed to careers in academic pathology and have a strong background in clinical and translational research.
Required core rotations in either Anatomic or Clinical Pathology will be completed and followed by up to three years of research under the supervision of the faculty of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Research areas include, but are not limited to, Immunology, Host-Microbe Interactions, Oncologic Pathology, Transfusion Medicine, Neuroscience, Digital Pathology and Infectious Disease.
The resident in the Research Track will be expected to identify a research mentor within the Department within the first 18 months of residency. Progress along the research track will be facilitated by the Residency Research Committee with the goal of ensuring the successful career development of the resident. The research track also provides the option of incorporating clinical subspecialty fellowship training either before or during the research years, and board certification in that subspecialty if available.

Funding Support Policy
In addition to receiving support from faculty mentors to conduct research, the department provides financial support for residents attending meetings. Residents are offered $2,600.00 annually to attend national meetings, purchase books and professional memberships. This support has provided nearly 100% of our residents with an opportunity to present their research at national and international meetings during their training.
