This policy is intended to establish fair criteria for the screening of applicants and appointment to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Educational Programs. It is a requirement of the Office of Graduate Medical Education that applicants must pass the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 exams or the COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2-CE exams before being accepted to an Emory PGY-1 position.
Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1)
For the first year of postgraduate training, the Emory University School of Medicine training programs participate in the NRMP through ERAS. To apply for a PGY-1 position, visit the ERAS website for instructions and requirements.

- Emory Univ SOM-GA - Pathology/Research: 1113300C1
Application Timeline
All residency applications must be made through ERAS. An application is considered complete when all required documents are submitted, following which an invitation to interview can be extended.
Interviews: Invitations for virtual interviews will be extended on a rolling basis from September through January
When submitting your application to the Department of Pathology, please follow the requirements for PGY-1 applicants through ERAS and also include a copy of your Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Interim Certificate or Standard Certificate, your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores (MD applicants) or the COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2-CE exams (DO applicants).
Please be aware that the notification from ECFMG of your passing test scores is not sufficient. In addition to passing the test you must have verification of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in your home country before ECFMG will issue an Interim or Standard Certificate.
Your application can be considered while ECFMG certification is pending, but under no circumstances will final appointment be made until the Training Program Director is in receipt of a copy of your Interim or Standard Certificate.
Postgraduate Year Two and Above
For applicants transferring from another ACGME-accredited Pathology Residency Training Program, verification of previous educational experiences and a summative competency-based performance evaluation are required.
Requirements that must be met and support materials that must be received before the applicant's file is considered complete are:
- Complete application form
- Dean's letter
- Medical school diploma
- USMLE Scores Step 1, Step 2 or the COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2-CE exams, Copy of Medical License, if applicable
- Above the training level of PGY-3, a copy of USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 must be included
- Letters of recommendation (3): One from the Program Director; two from Pathology Faculty. These letters should refer to the applicant's term of service and contain a statement regarding his/her performance and ability in pathology. If in military service, a letter from the Commanding Officer should be sent to the Program Director in which the applicant's personal and professional qualifications are evaluated.
