Why Emory EM?
When looking at residencies, I wanted to practice at an institution where I could hone my leadership skills, foster meaningful relationships with my colleagues, and continue to serve the disenfranchised. My medical school was based out of a county hospital, and I wanted to continue serving patients who need great healthcare the most. I really appreciated the emphasis on diversity, and Emory walks the walk and talks the talk. I did not want to train at a homogenous program where everyone looked like me. Additionally, the program is invested in your wellness and is very supportive when personal difficulties arise. Another unique aspect of Emory is that you train at county, community, and academic medical centers and so you get to experience many different healthcare environments. Personally, I'm interested in hospital administration and operations, and feel that Emory has amazing female mentors, the Healthcare Management GME track, and multiple opportunities to get involved.
Interests within EM?
Initially, I was attracted to EM because of the variety, fast pace, and high intensity. As my interest deepened, I discovered many other reasons to love EM! I enjoy collaborating, socializing, and learning, and these are activities I experienced during every EM shift I have ever worked. Most importantly, EM is a street-facing career. No patient is ever turned away, and you take care of those who have been let down by the current healthcare system. Many times, you function as a physician, friend, social worker, and counselor. After seeing inequalities and inefficiencies in healthcare, I was motivated to obtain my healthcare sector MBA. In the future, I hope to be involved in hospital administration and operations, so that I can change healthcare for the better.
5-year plan
Finish residency, followed by an EM Administrative Fellowship, and then work in academic EM and utilize my MBA and leadership skills in higher hospital administration.
