Overview
The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is active in clinical research with more than a dozen research projects that are active, or about to begin. Current research funding for the division exceeds one million dollars. Residents and fellows are encouraged to participate in research with faculty and are supported to travel to meetings to present study findings. Some current projects include:

Investigators
Gary F. Bouloux, DDS, MD, MDSc
Dr. Bouloux’s research interest focuses on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and surgical treatment outcomes. He has grants from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research that exceed $800,000. Current research projects include a multicenter study evaluating outcomes and the development of metal hypersensitivity following TMJ Total Joint Replacement and Temporomandibular Dysfunction and Central Sensitization. Several addition research projects, including a clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of platelet rich plasma following TMJ arthroscopy, are pending grant approval.
Shelly Abramowicz, DMD, MPH
Dr. Abramowicz is the director of research and focuses on pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). Current projects include evaluating Quality of Life in Children with Head and Neck Free Flaps, Pediatric Orbital Sports Injuries and Resident Applications to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Mistakes Made. Her prior research has led to multiple peer reviewed publications in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery where she also serves on the Editorial Board. She is actively engaged in mentoring the Emory OMFS residents in multiple research projects.
James Jeong, MD, DMD
Dr. Jeong joined Emory in 2023 and has a particular interest in oral cancer and free flap reconstruction. He has several projects that are in development related to improving patient outcomes following surgical treatment of oral cancer.
Steven M. Roser, DMD, MD
Dr. Roser’s research interests focus on Global Outreach Surgery. He has several institutional Emory grants with current research projects including the Development of a Global Perioperative Health Center at Emory, Covid-19 Community and Healthcare Facility Checklists Enhancing Preparedness in Low Resource Environments, and Global Pathology.
