Gary Bouloux MD/DDS/MDSc
Overview
Dr. Gary Bouloux joined the Emory Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2006 as director of the OMFS residency. In 2020 he transitioned from this role to serve as interim chief of Emory OMFS.
He is credited with introducing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy and total joint replacement for TMJ, microsurgery, and interpositional allogeneic nerve grafting for trigeminal nerve repair to the clinical services of Emory OMFS.
His primary research evolves from his interest in TMJ dysfunction, and includes surgical outcomes, psychological predictors of outcomes, laser-assisted surgical arthroscopy, and the use of hyaluronic acid. His multicenter studies into the efficiency of various surgical treatments for temporomandibular disorders have advanced the science and practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and he is considered one of the world's leaders in evidence-based management of temporomandibular dysfunction. He has also evaluated surgical plates used in the repair of jaw fractures and mandibular resection.
Dr. Bouloux has received the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Research Recognition Award for his significant work in the area of TMJ dysfunction and treatment, as well as the Daniel Laskin Award for the most outstanding publication in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
