Since her graduate training, Dr. Read has been committed to a career at the interface of basic neurobiology research and translational neuro-oncology. She earned her B.A. in Biology from Carleton College and her Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from Washington University School of Medicine, where she studied the neuroendocrine tumor syndrome Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 with Dr. Ross Cagan. Her graduate research aided in the development of new therapies. She completed her postdoctoral training in developmental neurobiology and neuro-oncology at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the University of California in San Diego with co-mentors Drs. John Thomas, Webster Cavenee, and Frank Furnari. In 2012, Dr. Read joined the faculty of Emory as an Assistant Professor. In 2022, she was appointed Assistant Director for Basic Research in the Winship Cancer Institute, where she supports the development of new funding and training programs for junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows in support of Winship’s mission to improve cancer care. Additionally, she serves the broader cancer research community nationally as a charter member of the Advanced Therapeutics A study section of the NIH and as a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research.

Dr. Read is also dedicated to training the next generation of scientists, including neurosurgery and neurology residents, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduates, and post-baccalaureate trainees. All of her former trainees have remained in scientific careers, many of whom have won awards for their research on Dr. Read’s team and have successfully transitioned to prestigious clinical fellowship and faculty positions, postdoctoral positions, medical school, graduate school, or careers in government, clinical research, or scientific industry. Her postdoctoral and neurosurgical resident trainees have been awarded prestigious fellowships and awards from the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation and NINDS.

Outside of the laboratory, Dr. Read enjoys gardening, attending live music concerts, and spending time with her family, including her two daughters, who are also pursuing scientific studies.
