The Foot and Ankle fellowship at Emory University provides a unique opportunity for fellows to mold their experience based on their clinical interests and career ambitions. The faculty are diverse in terms of their interests, experience, and training backgrounds. This exposes the fellow to multiple surgical techniques and varied clinical thought processes. From forefoot reconstruction to total ankle arthroplasty – the fellow will be exposed to all pathology seen in the foot and ankle. Furthermore, the fellowship offers exposure to nearly every clinical setting – from elective outpatient surgery to fracture care at a level one trauma center. This diverse clinical experience will help prepare fellows for whatever career path they choose. Research opportunities are abundant and clinical fellows can choose from a wide range of projects – both basic science and clinical projects. Faculty are heavily involved in research and work closely with the fellow to get projects started and across the finish line. The fellow meets with the fellowship director every rotation to go over the goals and experience. The main goal of the fellowship is to train orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons who are empathic, competent, and well-equipped to succeed in whatever professional career path they choose. Faculty are committed to ensuring this happens.
One of the more overlooked aspects of fellowship is the importance of the relationships that are built during this year. Make no mistake - the Foot and Ankle fellow will become a part of the Emory family. The time spent with the Foot and Ankle faculty both and in and outside of the clinical setting will set the stage for a lifetime of mentorship and collegiality. The faculty are determined to not only give the fellows a great clinical experience, but also to foster their professional careers beyond the year of fellowship.
