About Us
Community Engaged Needs Assessment of South Asians in Atlanta (CENSAA) aims to understand the cardio-metabolic health and culturally relevant risk factors of South Asians living in the Atlanta metro area. South Asians, individuals who trace their ethnicity to the Indian subcontinent (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh), represent one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the US and are at high risk for cardio-metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. It is unclear whether the cardiometabolic health of South Asians in the southeastern U.S., as well as the cultural beliefs and practices influencing health and health behaviors, are similar to that of immigrant South Asians in other metropolitan areas in the U.S. or South Asia. To inform interventions and policies to address the needs of South Asian immigrants, we must first address the critical gap of understanding the baseline characteristics, health beliefs, and cultural and religious practices of this population.
Goals
- Partner with a community advisory board to gather formative data from the South Asian community to inform the development of a survey of health beliefs, religious and cultural practices.
- Collect population-based data on South Asian immigrants living in the Atlanta area to identify health needs in this community.
