Overview
Patients receiving breast cancer care through Emory are treated within the Breast Cancer Program at Winship Cancer Institute, Georgia’s only National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Division of Breast Surgery serves as the surgical component of this multidisciplinary program, collaborating closely with medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast imaging, genetics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and survivorship teams to deliver coordinated, evidence-based care.
Multidisciplinary, Coordinated Care
Every newly diagnosed breast cancer case is reviewed in multidisciplinary tumor conference. This ensures treatment recommendations reflect consensus input from surgical, medical, and radiation oncology specialists.

Surgical Expertise Within the Winship Breast Program
The Division of Breast Surgery provides comprehensive surgical management for:
- Invasive breast cancer
- Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
- High-risk breast lesions
- Hereditary breast cancer syndromes
- Benign breast disease
- Risk-reducing surgery for high-risk patients
Surgical techniques include:
- Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy)
- Mastectomy, including nipple-sparing approaches when appropriate
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy
- Axillary surgery
- Oncoplastic techniques
- Coordination of immediate or delayed breast reconstruction
Reconstruction services are provided in partnership with Emory plastic and reconstructive surgery specialists.

Breast cancer care extends beyond surgery. Through Winship, patients have access to a well of resources including: nurse navigation services, genetic counseling, nutrition and wellness services, psychosocial oncology support, and survivorship planning.

Patients seeking consultation with a breast surgeon may request an appointment through Winship Cancer Institute or ask their referring physician to submit a referral.
