Overview
My overall career goals are to optimize injury prevention and rehabilitation by targeting the central nervous system mechanisms propagating musculoskeletal pain and injury. To accomplish this, my team and I employ biomechanically instrumented neuroimaging paradigms (functional magnetic resonance image [fMRI]) to discover brain regions contributing to injury-risk motor control and pain. These methods include a variety of ankle, knee, and hip exercises during active brain scanning, in addition to traditional resting or noxious stimulation fMRI methods and/or complementary brain imaging modalities (e.g., diffusion tensor imaging). Neural mechanistic data are then used to inform the development and clinical application of targeted techniques that promote adaptive neuroplasticity for pain-free, injury-resistant movement.
