Fellows in this section have the opportunity to evaluate a large number of oncology patients whose diagnoses include a wide spectrum of conditions, including ocular melanoma, retinoblastoma, metastases, hemangiomas, surface tumors, and any number of referrals from other sections. The ocular oncology section is also responsible for gross and microscopic examination of all surgical pathology specimens.
The fellow actively participates in resident and medical student education, including preparation of lectures and conferences. Research opportunities and clinical pathology projects are available, contingent on the applicant's experience and abilities. A modest stipend is available, and submission of research fellowship grants is encouraged on an individual basis.
For more than a decade, the Emory Department of Ophthalmology has organized and hosted the Southeastern Ocular Oncology and Pathology (SEOP) conference, where researchers and clinicians gather to present and discuss unique and challenging cases.
