Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat movement disorders such as tremor. It uses high intensity ultrasound beams to create a lesion (ablation) in the motor part of the brain that is involved in tremor. It requires no scalp incision, no skull bur hole, no hardware implantation, and no anesthesia. The entire procedure is performed in an MRI scanner on an outpatient basis, and tremor reduction is immediate. The most common side effects include temporary gait instability and tingling in the arm or face.
The FUS ablation is sometimes also called high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) or MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS).
