Valerie was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. She went to medical school at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá where she developed an interest in neurology. Her passion for clinical neurology and her interest in studying the molecular aspects underlying brain function brought her to Emory University where she participated in research studying the modulatory effects of tPA on the synaptic compartment. Soon after arriving in the US, she realized that Atlanta felt like a second home. Attracted by the warm weather, the friendly population and the southern charm, she decided to pursue her residency training at Emory, in a program that offers incredible academic and research opportunities. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her friends, family and dog; traveling; biking; and trying new foods.
