Emory University Hospital is located in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, directly adjacent to the School of Medicine and the Emory University undergraduate campus. Consistently ranked in the top 15 for neurology and neurosurgery in the US News & World Report, EUH is also nationally recognized in several other medical specialties. In addition, EUH has achieved prestigious Magnet recognition status for excellence in nursing care.
Consult Service
Staffed by a dedicated team of neuro-hospitalists, the Neurology consult service is a robust consult-liaison service aimed at providing emergency room and inpatient neurologic consultations at EUH. The team consists of two attendings, two PGY-2 residents, one PGY-4 residents, and a nurse practitioner. The PGY-2 residents are primarily responsible for the ongoing care of patients followed by the consult service, including daily assessments, formulating treatment plans, coordinating care with primary teams, and performing certain procedures (such as lumbar punctures). The PGY-4 resident is the first point of contact for all consulting services, including the ED, all ICUs, Hospital Medicine, and various other primary services. PGY-4 residents are also responsible for running the Acute Stroke pages.
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
The epilepsy monitoring unit is a 10-bed unit dedicated to the diagnostic and presurgical evaluation of refractory epilepsy patients. Additionally, patients undergoing intracranial monitoring for seizure localization are housed in the EMU. Residents spend time during the PGY-2 and PGY-3 year rotating in the EMU. During the PGY-2 year, residents learn the basics of EEG interpretation and seizure semiology. As a PGY-3, there are opportunities to go to the OR for epilepsy surgery cases and to participate in bedside procedures such as functional cortical mapping.
Neurocritical Care Unit
The Emory Neurocritical Care service is a 32 bed unit that is dedicated to a variety of emergent neurologic and neurosurgical conditions. The service is highly regarded for managing the largest volume of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients in the country, in addition to ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, post-neurosurgical care, status epilepticus, neuromuscular emergencies, and a variety of other diseases. The Emory neurocritical care unit is a fellow and mid-level provider driven service, but neurology residents are welcome to spend elective time on the unit to get a well-rounded inpatient/ICU experience.
