Ibironke Apata
Overview
Dr. Apata is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Renal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. She is a Staff Nephrologist at Grady Memorial Hospital, providing care to patients on the Nephrology Inpatient Consult Service and a Nephrology Consultant for the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) Dialysis Safety Team. She serves as the Director for Infection Control for Emory Dialysis. Dr. Apata received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian HospitalWeill Cornell and her nephrology fellowship training Emory University-affiliated hospitals. She also completed a 2-year training as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer at CDC.
Dr. Apata is a clinician educator and public health practitioner who has dedicated her work to improving care and outcomes of patients with kidney disease. Her work focuses on preventing infections, increasing vaccine uptake and improving antibiotic prescribing practices among patients on dialysis. She works with CDCs Dialysis Safety Team to develop and implement strategies to increase uptake of CDCs infection control recommendations for outpatient dialysis facilities in the United States. She led the Antibiotic Stewardship White Paper Writing Group, a collaboration between CDC and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), focused on strategies for optimizing antibiotic use in the outpatient hemodialysis facilities. She also served as the co-editor for ASNs Nephrologist Transforming Dialysis Safety (NTDS) educational curriculum on infection prevention in dialysis clinics for nephrology fellows.
Dr. Apata has applied creative and innovative approaches to improve education of nephrology fellows in infection prevention and control and renal palliative care. She has published original articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her work at national and international conferences. Her contributions and service have been recognized through institutional and national awards including CDCs Ebola Response Service Award in 2015, Emory University School of Medicines EMPACT Outstanding Attending Mentor Award in 2020, Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Medicines Hidden Gem Award in 2021, and Emory School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Clinical Distinction Award (Senior Physician) in 2021.
