"Our teaching ensures our grandchildren and great grandchildren have access to Seavey-quality doctors, and our research gives this new generation of doctors a foundation they can build upon." - Dr. David Roberts, Rollins Director of the Seavey Clinic
"Joy is the holy fire that keeps our purpose warm and our intelligence aglow." – Helen Keller
In addition to providing excellent patient care, Seavey Clinic physicians grow and give back through research and teaching. Both demand time and energy, and these physicians are motivated by two powerful personal benefits: joy and purpose.
“Do something valuable,” Roberts tells the physicians who are recruited and selected through a rigorous vetting process. “Seavey Clinic is the sandbox, and it is stocked with the best toys. Our doctors are free to create research projects and training improvements, and when they are fully engaged in their work, our patients and everyone benefits.”
Dr. Thomas Jarrett is helping leukemia patients measure their hemoglobin with their cell phones while Dr. Sharon Bergquist is determining how much stress patients are under by measuring cortisol in their hair. Seavey doctors are helping patients to manage their diabetes with technology and to avoid dementia by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
In addition to seeing patients, doctors at the Seavey Clinic are full, practicing members of the faculty. Research, leadership, scholarship, and service are all part of being a Seavey clinician.
They teach medical students to embody the spirit of Dr. Paul W. Seavey, the clinic’s namesake, by combining creativity, innovation, and attentive patient care in their approach to internal medicine.
“Given the tools and the time, these physicians will do great things,” Dr. Roberts says. “Research and training at the Seavey Clinic are aimed at creating their joy and creating their careers.”
