Gillian Thornton grew up in Arizona, where she graduated from Arizona State University in May 2021 with a bachelors in genetics, cell, and developmental biology and a Spanish minor. While at ASU, she discovered her interest in genetics, ethics, and public policy, leading her to pursue a career in genetic counseling. She also completed an undergraduate honors thesis investigating the opinions of genetic counselors practicing in Arizona surrounding the benefits and difficulties of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Outside of school, Gillian worked at as a server in a retirement home for five years. She got to know residents living on independent and assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care floors. She spent time with them all during the COVID-19 lockdowns when their family and friends were unable to visit. She also volunteered with hospice and palliative care.
During her gap year, Gillian worked as a genetic counseling assistant at the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. She provided administrative support to genetic counselors and regularly communicated with patients, other departments, referral networks, and providers.
She also really enjoys yoga, lifting, thrifting, exploring National Parks, and finding new coffee shops. She has family near Emory University and is very excited to be part of the class of 2024! This application process is challenging, and Gillian was just as nervous as you are. So please feel free to reach out with any questions!
