Lectures and Educational Activities
The following lecture series and educational activities are part of the curriculum of the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program and are required for fellows to attend or to participate:
- Academic half-day every Thursday afternoon
- Morbidity & mortality with quality improvement
- Basic science journal club
- Clinical journal club
- Board review sessions
- Fundamentals of Clinical Research course
- Palliative and supportive care series
Aside from the above, fellows are encouraged to participate in the following:
- Grand Rounds - Multidisciplinary oncology Grand Rounds held weekly on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the John H. Kauffman Auditorium (Room C5012, 5th Floor) at Winship Cancer Institute. Fellows have an opportunity to meet with the guest speaker immediately following the lecture.
- Elkin lecture series - A series of lectures on an array of clinical and laboratory-based research topics held weekly on Fridays at 12:15 p.m. also in the John H. Kauffman Auditorium (Room C5012, 5th Floor) at Winship Cancer Institute. This is a required activity for fellows in the physician-scientist track.
- Winship Cancer Institute sponsored symposia - Various continuing education conferences held throughout the year featuring focused topics by specific cancer type.
Fellows are also encouraged to:
- Attend and present cases at tumor board conferences: disease-specific tumor board and molecular tumor board
- Attend recommended research/development/teaching courses
Professional Conferences
Fellows receive support to attend one professional meeting each year, such as the annual meetings of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) or the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Each fellow is nominated for professional membership to ASH and ASCO.
Funding for additional meetings may be obtained for fellows who present at the meeting(s) per approval of the Program Director.
