The Emory Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship Program follows the established guidelines set forth by:
- Emory University School of Medicine
- Emory Graduate Medical Education (GME) office concerning resident eligibility and selection
- Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
All residents appointed to the Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship Program of the Emory University School of Medicine must meet the following qualifications to be eligible for a position in this Emory graduate medical education program:
- All applicants must have graduated from:
- A medical school in the U.S. or Canada - accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- A college of osteopathic medicine in the U.S. - accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOACOCA)
- A medical school outside the U.S. or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
- Holding a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment.
- Holding a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Georgia - i.e., the U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which this ACGME-accredited program is located.
- All prerequisite post-graduate clinical education required for initial entry or transfer into ACGME-accredited residency programs must be completed in:
- ACGME-accredited residency programs
- AOA-approved residency programs
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)-accredited residency programs located in Canada
- Residency programs with ACGME International (ACGME-I) Advanced Specialty Accreditation.
Residency programs must receive verification of each resident’s level of competency in the required clinical field using ACGME, CanMEDS, or ACGME-I Milestones evaluations from the prior training program upon matriculation.
- To be eligible for an appointment at the Preventive Medicine-1 (PM-1) level, residents must have successfully completed at least 12 months of clinical education in a residency program that satisfies the requirements in the preceding bullet.
- Resident experience must include at least 10 months of direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Residents should develop competency in the following fundamental clinical skills during this experience:
- Obtaining a comprehensive medical history
- Performing a comprehensive physical examination
- Assessing a patient’s medical conditions
- Making appropriate use of diagnostic studies and tests
- Integrating information to develop a differential diagnosis
- Developing, implementing, and evaluating a treatment plan
- To be eligible for appointment at the Preventive Medicine-2 (PM-2) level, residents/fellows must have completed:
- An ACGME-accredited residency program
- At least 50 percent of the requirements for a Master’s degree
