Alix Ferdinand earned her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and trained in dermatology before shifting her focus to public health and preventive medicine. Her interests include lifestyle medicine, systems-level approaches to patient-centered care and mentoring future physicians.
Nathan Holterman, MD
Nathan Holterman has lived in many places but calls Chicago home. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Providence College (B.A. Humanities) and his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine (MD, 2019). He completed his internship in Pediatrics at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth before being selected to serve as an active-duty US Naval Flight Surgeon. After earning his flight wings, he served as the medical officer of multiple Marine Corps aviation squadrons both in garrison and on deployment. After his honorable discharge, he decided to continue his medical training in public health and preventive medicine. He is part of Emory's Health Equity, Advocacy, and Policy (HEAP) Track and will earn his MPH from the University of Georgia College of Public Health. This year, he will serve as Chief Resident. He has an interest in lifestyle medicine, global health, refugee health, health policy, and planetary health.
Ted Johnson, MD, MPH
Ted Johnson earned his MD from Northwestern University and completed training in internal medicine, geriatric medicine, public health, and health outcomes research at UNC-Chapel Hill. Currently, he is the Department Chair of Family and Preventive Medicine and co-director of the Academic Internal Medicine Center in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Ted has a commitment to life-long learning and always wanted to do a Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Fellowship, so why not now?
For the past 25 years, Ted has focused on improving the health and quality of life for older adults with chronic medical conditions. His contribution to preventive medicine is in fall and fall injury prevention. He was a co-investigator for the CDC-funded trial of the STEADI toolkit in Emory Primary Care. He is now a co-investigator of the care.coach NIA/Small Business Innovation Research trial, focusing on an avatar-based delivery of a fall prevention program. Additionally, he serves on the American Geriatrics Society Advisory Committee on fall prevention and is particularly interested in the impact of urinary tract symptoms on fall risk.
Dr. Johnson additionally serves as a supporting physician in Emory Integrated Memory Care (IMC). This nurse-practitioner led primary care clinic for people living with dementia and their families recently selected by CMS as a Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) established dementia care program model. Ted assists in the conduct of the Annual Wellness Visit where he writes the required Personalized Prevention Plan for patients and their families.
Rachel A. Nyenhuis, MD
Dr. Rachel Nyenhuis earned her B.A. in Psychology and minor in Biology at the University of West Florida, followed by her M.D. at the University of Central Florida. She completed two years of residency training in Anesthesiology before beginning training in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine. Her interests in the field are broad and include infectious disease epidemiology, outbreak response, rural health, nutrition research, and toxicology. She has a special interest in medical and public health ethics, which she is exploring further via the Ethics Residency Track. During her downtime, she enjoys running, reading, baking, and relaxing with her friends and family.
Lucy Shi, DO
Lucy Shi was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised across the country before settling down in Arizona during high school. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!) and completed her medical degree at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. After an intern year in Pediatrics at Naval Medical Center San Diego, she spent the next five years as a U.S. Navy flight surgeon (training in the same class as our Chief - Nate!). Her time in military medicine ignited her passion for public health and preventive medicine. She has an interest in lifestyle medicine, driving change through health policy, mitigating the impact of chronic diseases by focusing on early detection and risk factor management, and empowering individuals to take control of their health to improve health outcomes. Outside of work, she is probably chasing after her two boys with her husband, trying new recipes to cook, or drawing.
