Application Information
Welcome to the Emory University Department of Anesthesiology! Our residency provides comprehensive education, training, and clinical experience in all facets of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. Anesthesiology residents study and train under the mentorship of a highly respected academic faculty comprised of subspecialty-trained clinicians, committed and experienced physician-educators, and successful physician-scientists.
We encourage applicants from broad and diverse backgrounds to train here and support our educational, clinical, and research missions of cultivating leaders in the field of anesthesiology.
Application for the Emory Anesthesiology Residency Program is available through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). However, this year we will be using the Residency Central Application (https://centralapp.accessgme.com ) as a supplement to ERAS. Invitations for interviews will be extended through Thalamus and The Match will remain with the NRMP. The Casper application is optional.
For this 2024-2025 application cycle, we are recruiting 12 categorical (four-year) spots.
As part of our efforts to increase the fairness and objectivity of our selection process – and to give you more opportunities to showcase your unique qualities – we now perform a holistic review of applications before extending invitations.
Our application requirements include a CV, personal statement, MSPE (dean’s letter), transcript, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation. A USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX 1 is required to apply, and either a USMLE Step 2 score or COMLEX 2 score is required prior to February 1, 2025. The application requirements are the same for international medical graduates.
*We recognize that not every applicant will have the opportunity to do a formal anesthesiology rotation or obtain a letter of recommendation from an anesthesiologist.
The application deadline for ERAS is September 25, 2024.
We welcome Osteopathic applicants, but we do require that applicants have taken the USMLE. We will only consider applicants who passed the USMLE Step 1 on the first attempt. We expect residents to complete Step 3 in the PGY-1 year.
International Graduates
We welcome applications from exceptionally qualified International Medical Graduates. International graduates must submit a copy of their ECFMG Standard Certificate. In addition to being certified by the ECFMG, international graduates must also be sponsored by the ECFMG. If you are accepted as a resident, the Dean's office will send you the materials you will need to be sponsored by the ECFMG and receive your J-1 visa. We do not support H-1 visas.
Interview Day Details
All interviews this season will be conducted by video on the Thalamus virtual platform, including those for local applicants. Applicants invited to interview will be given access to an applicant website with an overview of the program and videos from our program leaders, residents, and alumni. Many of these materials are already available on our website. Video interviews will consist of sessions with the Program Director, Associate Program Directors, and various other faculty members from the Recruitment Committee. In lieu of dinner with the residents this year, applicants will schedule informal zoom sessions with a Chief resident and other residents in the program. No in-person interviews or visits of any kind will be permitted until after our rank list is finalized. After this time, second look visits may be extended as room permits for those wishing to visit our program.
